Psst… People’s Fair 2016 at Civic Center Park

Capitol Hill's People's Fair | The Denver Ear

The People’s Fair 2016, one of Colorado’s longest-running urban festivals, is returning with its 45th Annual event this weekend, June 4th – 5th, 2016 at Civic Center Park.

The community-oriented, volunteer- based and music festival, People’s Fair, is produced by Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods (CHUN) and  benefits CHUN and other nonprofit organizations. The Fair brings together more than 200,000 attendees to kick off the summer festival season and engage in art, music and family experiences.

This year, the People’s Fair partners with the Denver Arts Festival, formerly the Downtown Denver Arts Festival, to present Fine Arts Avenue. Showcasing the works of 85 local and regional fine artists, Fine Arts Avenue will be located on 14th Avenue between Broadway and Bannock Streets. Media categories include ceramics, digital, drawing/graphics, fiber, glass, jewelry (all parts original), leather, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture and wood. Handcrafted arts also are available throughout the Fair site in the following categories: children’s items, dried floral, jewelry (beaded or strung), mixed media, paper, scents & oils/candles/soaps, wearable art and wood. More than 250 exhibitors will display their handcrafted goods.

The fair will also give attendees the opportunity to create their own pieces of art during an afternoon of painting and wine sipping in the park. Art in the Park gives the public an opportunity to paint their own masterpieces by following along with guest artist and instructor, Tommy Nahulu. There will be three Art in the Park painting sessions per day at the People’s Fair Wine Pavilion.

Attendees will also be able to view and vote in a special Mural Project event. The Mural Project is a theme-based art competition in which small teams of young Denver artists design and execute 6-foot by 8-foot canvas murals onsite during the People’s Fair. This year’s theme is “Your Neighborhood, Your Future,” and artists are given creative freedom to interpret the theme at their discretion. Participating organizations for this year’s project include Boys and Girls Club Wilfley Branch, Colorado’s Finest High School of Choice, Ridgeview Academy, Pangloss Gravitron and Compassion Road Academy.

The Mural Project will be located in the Promenade on the west side of Broadway between 14th Avenue and Colfax. A judging ceremony will take place on Sunday, June 5th. The public is encouraged to participate in the voting process by voting for the “People’s Choice” mural.

Food will also be available on-site, from traditional festival favorites, such as turkey legs, husk-roasted corn and funnel cakes, to traditional Mediterranean and Chinese cuisine, sweet potato fries and more, fairgoers can find an array of local bites on two food courts – one on Bannock and one on Broadway.

Alcoholic beverages will be available at the People’s Fair Wine Pavilion and beer tastings throughout the fair courtesy of Tivoli Brewing Company. The People’s Fair Wine Pavilion, located by the Cruisin’ 1430 Bandstand, near the southwest corner of Colfax and Broadway, offers a variety of wine tastings. Punch cards will be sold for 16 tickets and will allow patrons to try six tastes, two glasses of wine, or one glass of wine and three tastes. The public is invited to enjoy beer tastings of over 20 local brews throughout the site. Beer tasting tickets can be purchased for $20 at the center of Civic Center Park at the CHUN Tent, just east of the Main Stage.
