September 6th is “National Read A Book Day”, and in its honor, we are naming today the 10 best Denver local book stores, so you can enjoy a good read as well as help local residents’ businesses as well!

BookBar is a locally owned and operated concept book store located in the Berkley neighborhood in Denver. BookBar is a combination of a book store and wine bar and is also a community gathering space where book lovers are encouraged to lounge, read, meet and discuss books.
BookBar also offers a food menu based on locally sourced ingredients and homemade dishes and offers on-site, recurring events such: Happier Hour Story Time, CoffeeTalk, cooking demonstrations, and author events.
Broadway Book Mall
Location: 200 S Broadway, Denver, CO 80209
Hours: Monday 2pm – 6pm, Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 6pm, Sunday 11am – 5pm
Broadway Book Mall is a locally owned and independent book store located in the Baker neighborhood in Denver. Broadway Book Mall is the child of the (now-closed) Denver Book Mall, and includes nine of the original Denver Book Mall booksellers.
The store’s collection features mystery, horror, science fiction, fantasy and general fiction, many of which are autographed. Most books are gently used, but they have a wide array of new books as well. They also offer a good selection of cookbooks, politics, women’s issues, Hispanic literature, African-American literature, gay and lesbian issues and literature, humor, children and young adult, gardening, books on books and on writing, audio books, as well as general non-fiction.
Capitol Hill Books
Location: 300 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80203
Hours: Monday – Saturday 10am – 6pm, Sunday 10am – 5pm
Capitol Hill Books has been open for more than 36 years in the Capitol Hill neighborhood in Denver. This book store is Denver’s largest searchable database of used books. Books for sale include fiction, non-fiction, history, foreign language books and more.
This book store supports the local Denver community by donating a portion of the money from discounted red cart books to a variety of local nonprofit and charity organizations.
They also offer a 10% discount for teachers on books for use in the classroom, as well as a 10% discount on your used books for one year when you accumulate $100 in used books purchases on a bibliomaniac card.
City Stacks Books & Coffee

Hours: Monday – Thursday 7am – 7pm, Friday 7am – 8pm, Saturday 10am – 8pm, Sunday 10am – 6pm
City Stacks Books & Coffee, located in the LoDo neighborhood in Denver, is a family owned and operated bookstore and espresso bar.
City Stacks specializes in fiction and non-fiction books and also features a kids section as well as gift items such as games, puzzles, calendars, T-shirts, pens and pencils, mugs, coffee and tea, press pots, chocolate, notebooks, pottery, and cards.
Book lovers can enjoy reading at their espresso bar or at their window counters and can also attend speciality host reading events held throughout the year.
The Hermitage Bookshop

The Hermitage Bookshop is one of Denver’s oldest independent bookstores. The bookshop was established in 1973 and a has been a member of the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America (ABAA) for 30 years.
Located in the Cherry Creek North neighborhood in Denver, this bookshop offers Western Americana, children’s books, first editions, signed editions, military books, illustrated books, hunting & fishing books, travels & voyages, sets & fine bindings and more.
Kilgore Books & Comics

Hours: Daily 10am – 6pm
Kilgore Books & Comics has been open since 2008 and features a fine collection of used books such as literature, sci-fi and fantasy, philosophy, science, history, and speciality comic books.
Mutiny Information Cafe
Location: 2 S Broadway, Denver, CO 80209
Hours: Monday – Thursday 8am – 12am, Friday & Saturday 8am – 3am, Sunday 8am – 12am
Mutiny Information Cafe is a book store that sells a large diverse selection of used and new books, records and comics and also includes a coffee bar, music store, comic book shop and even has working pinball machines.
Mutiny also features special events such as live music nights, open mic events, singer-songwriter nights, comedy nights, documentary movies, author readings and meet & greets, art shows, freak shows, film festivals, community meetings, writer groups and more.

Second Star to the Right Children’s Books

Second Star to the Right Children’s Books, located in the Berkley neighborhood in Denver, is an independent book store that is locally owned by current and former elementary school teachers and sells news and used children’s books, toys and local and hand crafted items.
They also hosts a variety of events for children such as story time, weekly kids yoga classes, sing alongs, movie nights, baby events, author events and more, and even offer birthday parties that include pizza and juice with a themed scavenger hunt and story time.
Tattered Cover Book Store

Tattered Cover Book Store is a Denver staple and has been around for over 40 years. This indie bookstore, first opened back in 1971 in the Cherry Creek North neighborhood in Denver, and has been expanding ever since. Owner Joyce Meskis is the recipient of many prestigious awards for intellectual freedom and is one of the guiding forces of independent bookselling in the country.
Tattered Cover sells new and used books for adults and young readers, newspapers, and magazines. Tattered Cover also has a long history of hosting live author events, averaging over 400 authors, illustrators, and public figures each year.

West Side Books

West Side Books, located in the Highlands neighborhood in Denver, is an independent book store that sells new, used, rare and collectible books in all categories with over 20,000 volumes from all eras.
This locally owned book store also hosts a variety of events such as live concerts, author readings and notable speakers and allows for book trade-ins every Tuesday and Saturday of the week.
